Be a Tourist in Your Own Town – Elmwood Park Zoo

We’re in the doldrums of winter, where you may be fantasizing about the big adventures you’ll plan once the weather turns warm again! From the beach to the mountains, getting some time away from home is a great way to recharge your batteries and enjoy the sights and sounds of parts unknown. But until spring travel time rolls around, why not be a tourist right at home? The area around your Canvas Valley Forge apartment is a magnet for tourists—so before you pack your bags to check out what other locales have to offer, now’s a great opportunity to stay put and see what all the fuss is about in your very own town!

One of the most interesting spots you may not have considered visiting is Elmwood Park Zoo. Though smaller than the nearby Philly Zoo, Elmwood has a lot going for it—including that it’s only 20 minutes from your Canvas Valley Forge apartment! Conveniences aside, the zoo is a great place to visit in the winter, when the crowds are thinner and the school groups haven’t yet scheduled their trips. While it’s a perfect spot to bring the grandkids for some hands-on learning, visitors of all ages can appreciate the entertainment and education that abound at the zoo.

Elmwood Park Zoo has been in operation for almost 100 years. Owned and operated by the Norristown Zoological Society, it aims to educate local communities about wildlife and encourage them to participate in conservation efforts. To those aims, it has amassed more than 100 species from around the world. Calling the zoo home are everything from giraffes to bald eagles. In addition to strolling past the exhibits, visitors can get up and close with many of the animals. In a number of special sections and shows, guests are invited to handfeed parakeets, bison and giraffe. Many of the animals also participate in live shows with zoologists, who teach about the species’ background and unique qualities. All of that learning may have visitors working up an appetite, and guests can indulge at a café or a number of treats stands (including a beer garden for the adults-only crowd!).

Before you start daydreaming about your future travel plans, check out what’s right in the backyard of your Canvas Valley Forge apartment!
