Here’s How to Support Our Local Community this MLK Day
Every year, millions around the country come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day of service to the community in honor of the life and work of one of the country’s foremost civil rights icons. As the last generation old enough to remember Martin Luther King Jr’s work in action, this man holds a special place in our history books, but also in many of our hearts.
In 2021, given the ongoing pandemic, the community service projects held on MLK Day will certainly look and feel a bit different—but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. There are still many worthwhile projects right near your Canvas Valley Forge apartment—and some that you can do right from home!—so you can safely give back to those in need.
One such cause is the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County. Located just five minutes from your Canvas Valley Forge apartment, the organization welcomes volunteers of all ages—especially seniors!—to provide a range of services to locals in need. So if you’re looking for a change of scenery and a new and fulfilling opportunity in your life, check out what you can bring to the vital work of RSVP.
The organization relies on more than 1,200 volunteers every year to deliver comprehensive programming for Montgomery County’s most vulnerable residents. Efforts include: literacy programs for youth, mentoring, meal delivery, Medicare counseling, tutoring, technology training for fellow seniors and other opportunities with partner nonprofit organizations. And many of the volunteer projects can be completed safely right from the comfort of your Canvas Valley Forge apartment; for instance, if you’re skilled in math or science, you can virtually tutor a local high school or elementary school student in such subjects. Or, you can take your own experience with Medicare to counsel other seniors over the phone on the process.
This Martin Luther King Day, take the opportunity to check out this or other local volunteer-driven organizations—every act, no matter how small, can give back to the community in a big way!
