Secrets of the Antique Roadshow

Join Gordon Converse, a local antique dealer and appraiser from PBS’s popular “Antiques Roadshow”, in the Great Room for complimentary appraisals. You are invited bring an item or high quality photo of an item for a free verbal appraisal. (*Please note, some items cannot be appraised including jewelry, coins & stamps.)

Select items will be chosen for appraisal as part of the talk: “The Secrets of The Antiques Roadshow”. Following the talk, the conversation will continue on what to look for when buying an antique.

You are welcome to attend part of, or all of this event. You are not required to bring an item for appraisal for the talk; nor do you have to attend the talk for your appraisal.

Most notably Mr. Converse was among the first dozen or so appraisers picked for PBS’s Antiques Roadshow pilot, eventually doing 10 seasons of roadshow “tours”.

Gordon started his career at age 13 with collecting and restoring clocks and watches, when he started haunting local jewelers for discarded watches for repair. He continued his activities throughout his college years, majoring in Fine Arts at Richmond’s Virginia Commonwealth University.

By the 1980s his restoration hobby had grown into a profession, so he launched a business restoring antique clocks. Since then he has been busy with dealings and restorations of numerous individual collectors and institutions, including The Barnes Foundation, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Dept of Interior (in servicing the clock atop Independence Hall), The Philadelphia Athenaeum, and The U. S. Department of State.

As his career grew so did the scope of his business. At numerous antique shows in major cities across American he presented a variety of antique furniture, fine arts, and decorative arts, all with a leaning towards timepieces. He also operated a gallery in Wayne for 30 years.

Although semi-retired, Gordon still takes on local clock restorations with enthusiasm, always seems to come up with something interesting to sell, and still seeks bargains at auctions and flea markets.

Canvas is pleased to have him as a resident, and grateful for volunteering his time to host this event.
